ANCHORAGE, AK — May 12, 2008 — The American Civil Liberties Union
of Alaska today announced the appointment of Tiffany McClain as the Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Public Policy Coordinator. McClain will be
the first permanent full-time staff member dedicated solely to the advancement
and protection of LGBT rights in the state of Alaska.
McClain is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College and earned an MA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she studied the politics of gender and race in U.S. history. Originally from St. Louis, MO, she first came to Alaska for a working vacation during the summer of 2007 and is looking forward to making Anchorage her home. “I feel privileged to have been offered an opportunity to work on such an important project—protecting the equality and civil rights of LGBT people—in a state for which I have so much respect and affection.”
“In fulfilling our mandate to protect the constitutional rights of all Alaskans, the ACLU is particularly pleased to make this long term commitment to ending discrimination in our state, including ensuring legal protection for LGBT Alaskans,” said Jeffrey Mittman, Executive Director of the ACLU of Alaska. “Tiffany has both the intellect and passion to step into this needed role.” McClain’s position is supported by the Tides Foundation’s State Equality Fund, a philanthropic partnership that includes the Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, the Gill Foundation, and other anonymous donors.
The ACLU of Alaska Foundation is a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the individual rights of all Alaskans under the U.S. and Alaska Constitutions, and is affiliated with the American Civil Liberties Union, the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to advocacy, public education, and litigation in support of civil rights and civil liberties.
