Take Action!

HELP THE ACLU STOP DISCRIMINATORY HB 3! A driver’s license primary purpose is to allow its bearer lawfully to drive a car, it is not intended as a document to relate to one’s immigration status.

House Bill 3 would require the State of Alaska both to determine whether someone is legally present in the country and to speculate on how long that individual may stay. It’s once-a-year requirement to renew a driver’s license for those present for an indefinite period of time imposes an unlawful and unfair burden on legal immigrants, and invites racial profiling by state employees.

PLEASE TAKE TWO MINUTES RIGHT NOW TO CALL OR EMAIL YOUR SENATOR AND LET HER KNOW YOU OPPOSE HB 3!

The State of Alaska wouldn’t put special conditions on driver’s license renewal for drivers of a certain race, sex, or religion, and it shouldn’t do so to legal immigrants.

House Bill 3 would impose unreasonable burdens on those immigrants for reasons having nothing to do with the fitness of the individual to drive a car.

Requiring employees of the Division of Motor Vehicles to assess someone’s immigration status would:

  • Cause unnecessary delay at the DMV;
  • Inevitably lead to mistakes regarding individuals immigration status, and
  • Invite unfair and discriminatory racial profiling.

This bill has passed the House, where many Representatives chose to single-out lawful immigrants for unfair treatment. We must stop this legislation in the Senate. For additional information on why the ACLU opposes this bill, read our written testimony.
